1982: A Chance Encounter That Changed Everything

Hello, I'm Khurram Iqbal, a former Assistant Vice President at AIG and previously a Professor of English Literature. I currently reside in Roanoke, Texas. I want to share with you the true journey behind LLIVO—a story that began with a single act of kindness and has evolved into a global movement aimed at empowering underprivileged youth and transforming travel experiences worldwide. In 1982, as a university student in a South Asian town, I had an encounter that would forever shape my life's purpose. Walking through the vibrant streets, I noticed a young girl working as a household servant. She was diligently cleaning floors while children her age were attending school. The sight of her struck me deeply. It felt unjust that a child should be deprived of education and the joys of childhood.

Moved by her situation, I approached her parents and proposed that if they allowed her to pursue an education, I would compensate them financially. They agreed, opening the door to a future that had previously been unimaginable for her.

I fondly referred to her as LLIVO, a name inspired by her resilience and spirit. Over time, LLIVO flourished. She became the first in her family to graduate high school and earn a diploma, breaking the cycle of servitude that had confined her family for generations. She even became a teacher, a beacon of hope in her community.

1995: A New Chapter in the United States

In 1995, I migrated to the United States. Though miles apart, the memory of LLIVO's transformation remained a constant source of inspiration. I pursued a career in IT, eventually becoming an Assistant Vice President at AIG, but the desire to make a meaningful impact never left me.

November 25, 2022: A Humbling Reunion

After nearly four decades, I returned to my hometown. To my surprise, LLIVO and her family organized a heartfelt reunion, presenting me with a beautiful bouquet. They shared how my initial act of kindness had transformed not just her life but the entire family's trajectory. Many of her relatives were now educated, including her niece and nephew studying computer science at prestigious universities.

It was a humbling and emotional moment. I offered to mentor LLIVO's nephew and niece in their IT careers, leveraging my experience to support their aspirations.

The Inspiration Behind LLIVO

2018: An Unforgettable Experience in São Paulo

In 2018, during an official trip to São Paulo, Brazil, I faced the challenges of navigating a foreign city without knowing the local language. Simple tasks like ordering food became daunting. That was until a colleague, Michele Ventura, extended his friendship. He became my guide, introducing me to the best restaurants and local experiences. It reminded me of the connections Anthony Bourdain made during his travels.

This experience stayed with me. I realized the profound difference it makes when someone local offers guidance and companionship. I wondered why there wasn't a platform that facilitated such personalized travel experiences—where travelers could connect with locals who provide not just accommodation but also transportation and authentic interactions.

2023: Conceptualizing LLIVO at Harvard

While attending a training session at Harvard in 2023, I presented the concept of a platform that merges the personalized hospitality of Airbnb with the convenience of Uber-like transportation services. The idea was to create a space where travelers could find hosts who offer not just a place to stay but also airport pickup, local guidance, and cultural immersion. The concept was well received, fueling my determination to bring LLIVO to life.

June 2024: Mentoring the Next Generation

Back at home, I began mentoring remotely a young engineer who was nearing his graduation in computer science. His sister soon joined us. Around this time, I accepted an early retirement offer, viewing it as an opportunity to dedicate myself fully to LLIVO. Together, we worked tirelessly, navigating complex logistical and technical challenges to ensure uninterrupted progress..

Building LLIVO: Overcoming Challenges and Celebrating Successes

With limited resources, the engineers poured their hearts into developing the LLIVO platform using Sharetribe, a Finnish company specializing in marketplace solutions. Drawing on my 25 years of experience in global IT projects, we collaborated to create a platform that is now fully functional. Property owners can list their short-term rentals, and travelers can find accommodations tailored to their preferences, complete with compatible hosts and personalized services. We also produced over 100 videos and blog posts across social media, reaching over 30,000 impressions on LinkedIn alone. It has been a journey of passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment.

LLIVO Corporation is now officially registered in Texas, fulfilling all legal requirements, including establishing a business account with Chase Bank. This marks the beginning of an exciting chapter where we aim to make a global impact.
